Killington Opening Weekend

First tracks. First fire. First real weekend of the season.

Killington's Beast of the East reputation is built on one claim: they open first and they close last. Kilbourne Lodge has been the opening-weekend base for early-season regulars for decades. Grand stone fireplace, ski boot dryer, 3 minutes to the lifts.

Why Opening Weekend

The first weekend of a long winter

First

Killington opens first

Typically mid-to-late October — Killington is almost always the first resort in the East to spin a lift. Dedicated snowmaking, northern exposure, and a long history of opening early.

3 min

Drive to K-1

Early-season operations start at K-1. Three-minute drive. The free shuttle is a two-minute walk. You're closer to opening-day first chair than most locals.

Fireplace

Vermont cold, solved

Early-season Vermont is cold without the snow pack that insulates the house in January. The grand wood-burning fireplace earns its keep this weekend above any other. Firewood provided.

Gear ready

Boot dryer & ski storage

A proper ski boot dryer (the feature guests always call out) and dedicated gear storage. First day's rental boots dry overnight. You don't pack wet gear on day two.

Softer rate

Pre-Thanksgiving pricing

Opening weekend rates are genuinely softer than December holidays and MLK/President's Day weekends. A proper ski weekend at a fraction of peak pricing — one of Killington's open secrets.

Pets OK

Bring the dog for winter walks

Fully fenced backyard. Early-season Vermont is beautiful for dog walks — late foliage lingering, first snows crisp underfoot. Crate or leash outside the fence.

Planning Notes

How opening weekend works

When does Killington open?

Opening date varies year to year based on temperatures and snowmaking conditions, but typically falls in mid-to-late October. Killington announces their opening date a few weeks in advance. Follow killington.com or the Killington Beast app for the current year.

What terrain is open?

Early-season operations are limited to whatever snowmaking has covered — typically a single top-to-bottom run off K-1. Superstar often opens first. Expect a concentrated, high-energy opening-weekend crowd on that one trail. Perfect for just-getting-your-legs-back laps.

How early should we book?

Opening-weekend regulars book in August or September once the date is announced. Earlier booking secures Kilbourne before the date is even public — worth it if you're flexible on which weekend it ends up being.

Any minimum-stay?

2-night minimum is typical. Many opening-weekend guests extend to 3 nights to avoid rushing the drive home on Sunday night.
